Dallas plastic surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist, Dr. Rod J. Rohrich chairs the 32nd Annual Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium, a unique, international venue dedicated to education and advancement of rhinoplasty and secondary rhinoplasty.

Dallas plastic surgeon, Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, will serve as chairman of the upcoming Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium, to be held March 6th to March 8th, 2015. The three day symposium, which is attended by plastic surgeons and otolaryngologists from around the world, is designed to provide surgeons with detailed information on current topics, emerging techniques, best practices, and advances in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty surgery.

The symposium will cover a diverse array of rhinoplasty specific topics such as measurement and analysis of the nasal tip, the use of grafts, osteotomies, considerations in ethnic rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty (also known as secondary rhinoplasty) a particularly difficult surgery which is performed on rhinoplasty patients who had a primary rhinoplasty with undesirable results. Presentations include demonstrations, lectures, Q&A sessions, and panel discussions with highly experienced rhinoplasty surgeons.

A unique feature of the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium is the symposium’s anatomy lab, which allows surgeons to perform the intricate and advanced surgical techniques required by rhinoplasty surgery on cadavers under the guidance and direction of Dr. Rohrich and other renowned experts in rhinoplasty. “The anatomy lab of the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium offers a unique advantage as it provides truly hands on experience and training in one of the most complex procedures in cosmetic surgery,” says Dr. Rohrich, who currently serves as a distinguished teaching professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “This symposium continues to be one of the most productive educational experiences for surgeons studying this difficult surgery.”

The program, which carefully screens and selects physicians through a peer review process, is designed to help consumers find the best healthcare professionals in various medical specialties.

During the nomination process, Castle Connolly contacts more than 50,000 licensed healthcare professionals nationwide to obtain nominations and feedback about the best doctors practicing in the United States today. They are asked to identify and nominate the most outstanding doctors in their medical specialties who they consider to be top doctors in their region, or nationwide. Self nominations are not allowed.

From there, a physician-led team of researchers reviews each nominee and checks the candidate’s background, medical education, board certification status, hospital and educational appointments, and professional recognitions and achievements. The group also reviews malpractice and disciplinary history to further screen the candidates. The final award recipients are selected by Castle Connolly editors together with the research team.

A well-known advocate for patient safety, Dr. Rohrich lectures frequently around the world at surgical conferences and educational meetings promoting safe and effective plastic surgery practices. He serves as chairman for the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium and also as Editor-in-Chief of the peer reviewed “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery”, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Based on his ongoing work in these areas, Dr. Rohrich has been designated as a SuperDoctor for the 10th consecutive year in 2014. The SuperDcotor award is only granted to the top 5 percent of regional medical specialists as rated by their peers. Dr. Rohrich is a longstanding advocate for patient safety. A large portion of his practice consists of secondary surgeries, often for patients who have had bad results from their primary surgeries. Over half of his rhinoplasty patients in Dallas, for example, come to him seeking revision rhinoplasty corrective surgery from a previous rhinoplasty which had a unsatisfactory outcome.

“Awards such as this one help to underscore the importance of surgeon selection and can act as a useful component to help guide patients who are seeking specialized care,” says Dr. Rohrich.

Dr. Rod J. Rohrich, Dallas plastic surgeon and Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, recently discussed facial fat compartments, fat grafting, and modern lift-and-fill facelifts before colleagues at “Plastic Surgery, The Meeting,” an annual conference held by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The importance and intricacies of this underlying facial structure were explored in detail during Dr. Rohrich’s presentation “Understanding and Utilizing Facial Fat Compartments in Fat Grafting.”

In keeping with the mission of this educational symposium, Dr. Rohrich shared insight on this emerging area of study. Advances in anatomical knowledge of subcutaneous fat compartments are changing facial rejuvenation techniques and altering the way facelift specialists approach these multi-faceted procedures. His presentation included technical and practical information relating to the concept of fat compartments and how surgeons can successfully apply this knowledge.

An understanding of fat compartments is especially valuable in a modern “lift-and-fill” facelift, an approach that Dr. Rohrich strongly advocates. During the lifting component of the procedure, the skin is gently tightened to reduce sagging and counter the effects of gravity. Fat grafts, taken from the patient’s own body, are used to restore lost volume and recreate a fuller, more youthful shape in cheeks, along the jaw, along the nasolabial fold and in areas that suffer from atrophy.

According to Dr. Rohrich, the term facelift is highly misleading. “A facelift performed today is not a single procedure,” explains Dr. Rohrich, “It is a combination of many component procedures that are combined together to uniquely address how each individual patient’s face has aged. The exact surgical approach for a facelift will vary widely for every individual patient based on their own unique anatomy and circumstances.”

During his lecture, Dr. Rohrich outlined fundamental principles to guide the procedure and achieve the most successful, individualized outcome. Dr. Rohrich strongly emphasizes starting with thorough facial analysis that puts an emphasis on maintaining and restoring the patient’s unique facial contours. For example, he often requests that his patients bring in photos of themselves from when they were younger, allowing him to better plan and ensure that the patient individuality is maintained.

“Facelifts should never follow a standardized formula,” says Dr. Rohrich. “Facelifts should be dynamic in nature and individualized based on the needs of the patient.”
